The building originally opened its doors in 1914 as a furniture store known as Weil and Company. In 1945, the building was sold to the St. Aloysius Roman Catholic Church and was renamed to The Gabriel Richard Building. Three years later, the Chicago Style and Neoclassical building would be turned over to the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Detroit and would serve as their headquarters until 2015.
